Make it yours.

It all began with an idea.

From a pile of stone, we will make your story reality in art.

Dry stone walling is a trade of artisan craftsman. This work of old is not forgotten. The Bison Hut Co. keeps these beautiful, rustic, charming, and wholly unique structures alive in paths, walls, follies, and more. With dry stone features in your sanctuary, your space is surely to be among the rare, envied, and majestic havens in modern times.

Dream it.

Homeowners imagined bringing life back to their land’s original stone features. A series of retaining walls terrace the slope from the drive, through their backyard, toward the creek running through their grove. These stable, earthen walls emerging from the soil would also become natural borders for their own beloved gardens, as well as newly coveted playgrounds for all the nature life.

In process, the driveway wall seen here 95% completed. The homeowners are so excited they started planting their new irises and more before their wall is complete.

Dream it.

A farm-to-table experience dreamed to preserve their year-round crops of fruits and vegetables, that they be freshly stored on site in the mountains of Colorado. A root cellar would be the ideal structure to naturally preserve their abundant harvests from their massive greenhouse. Native sandstone harvested locally would also complement the already abundant and beautifully existing stonework created by local dry stone wallers. Burrowed in the hillside next to the farmhouse would be an ideal location, and potentially serve as a future foundation for outdoor stone patio with gorgeous views of the surrounding valley and distant mountains. A cellar with room enough to accommodate a large table could also become the perfect setting for wine and cheese tastings.

Create it.

In process, the final structure included a blend of modern concrete foundation and mortar with the traditional dry stone look of walls and vaulted ceiling, in addition to true dry stone retaining walls and flower beds in front. The blend of modern and traditional created both a warm and welcoming structure that quietly found its home next to the main farmhouse. With a beautifully crafted wooden door and natural grass and wildflower fill, this will look as if it has resided here longer than its surrounding structures.

Dream it.

When your daughter and her fiancé buy a new home, well this becomes a wonderful playground for Dad. My children were raised with evening sits around our own backyard firepit, as well as with plenty of roasted marshmallows and spooky stories. Now was the time to pass the torch on. Their quaint suburban home came with a nearly blank canvas of a backyard, void of a single tree, and begging for a place for this young couple to entertain selves, family, and friends. A simple gravel base around a natural limestone fire pit, lined with fire brick and covered with a gorgeous and heavy Pennsylvania blue stone would make the perfect centerpiece in their new backyard.

Create it.

In process, a cross section of a traditional style dry stone wall (two walls leaning inward on each other) and to be lined with firebrick and covered with flagstone to create a solid, rather smooth, top to hold their favorite drinks and custom iron grate for outdoor, open-fire cooking. Completed late November 2021, they have been enjoying time outside weekly through the late fall and winter.
